Why contractors and investors trust permits over averages

National averages smooth away the differences that make or break a bid. Permit filings are what the work actually cost.

Permit-sourced valuations

Built from filings, not surveys

Every estimate starts from aggregated permit valuations in your market: what contractors actually filed, not what a survey guessed. More permits in, sharper estimates out.

Market-level accuracy

Your market, not the national average

Permits in Austin do not price like permits in Brooklyn. Every number is scoped to the market you build or invest in, because that is where the money goes.

Trade-by-trade breakdowns

See where the money goes

Plumbing, electrical, HVAC, framing, finishes: each trade gets its own $/sqft band with the permit count behind it, so you know which numbers are solid and which are thin.

Questions

How is this different from HomeAdvisor or Angi cost guides?

Those guides publish national averages with ranges so wide they are barely actionable. Permit Budget builds your estimate from actual permit filings in your market, trade by trade, so the number reflects what work really cost where you operate.

Where does the permit data come from?

Public permit records published by municipal building departments. We aggregate permit valuations by trade and market, normalize them, and keep ingesting new filings so the dataset gets denser and more accurate over time.

How accurate are the estimates?

Estimates are planning-grade: grounded in real permit filings and blind-tested against actual bid outcomes. Permit valuations can understate true contract cost, which is why we normalize the data and publish our methodology. It is a budgeting tool, not a substitute for a licensed contractor's bid.

What if my market is not covered yet?

Coverage opens market by market, starting where permit records are deepest. Waitlist signups tell us which markets to open next, and founding members get first access when their market goes live.

Can I switch markets on the Estimator plan?

Yes. The Estimator plan covers 1 market at a time, and you can change it anytime from Settings. Pro covers up to 5 markets, for contractors and investors working across regions.

What can I do with the API?

Pro users can pull estimates programmatically: scope in, cost breakdown out, ready to feed into a bidding or underwriting workflow. API docs ship with the API.
